He took a sip, filled the cup and poured it, thought and turned it back into the teapot. The second time, he poured again, as if he had paused, and hurriedly poured back into the kettle. This is the third time…
And, it seems, he noticed that I felt offended, and exactly five minutes later he made up his mind and handed it to me, pouring some tea into the bottom of the cup.
Poor fellow, he must have thought, “I’ve spilled too much,” he held his heart in his other hand. Stingy!
(Uzbeks have such a tradition that before drinking tea three times you need to pour the teapot back, and then distribute it to guests a few minutes later.)
