The word “barbecue”, which in a general sense refers to the method of cooking meat and other products on coals and open fire, has long existed in many languages of the world in various variations.
It is believed that in Europe it first appeared in Spanish: in the form “barbacoa” it is mentioned in a dictionary published in 1526. In Spanish, this word came from the New World – the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean called the word “barabicu” a frame of sticks, which was placed above the fire on supports. The meat was then fried on it.
