Pyramid of Kukulkan. The main attraction in Chichen Itza, Mexico is the 25-meter Kukulcan pyramid. The pyramid of Kukulkan (El Castilio) consists of 9 platforms, surrounded by stairs on all sides, the total number of which is 364 – that is, the number of days in a year. The wide, steep staircase is divided into 18 sections, each of which corresponds to a month of the year – exactly 18 months in the Mayan calendar. The pyramid is geographically very precise: the 4 sides face strictly south, north, west and east. On the north side of the pyramid, at the base of the steps, are two serpent heads in honor of the Mayan god Kulkan, or Feathered Serpent. Unfortunately, the exact date of construction of the pyramids is not known. Their age is estimated to be 3000 years.
