Why does stomach growl?

Rumbling in the abdomen is the result of the movement of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract during the peristaltic contraction of its walls. If the stomach growls before eating, this is completely normal: this is how our body prepares for eating.

The walls of the stomach and intestines contract, which helps digest food. For the same purpose, the stomach secretes gastric juice. In an empty stomach, gas bubbles and gastric juices mix with the air that we swallow and emit a characteristic rumbling.

If you go to visit hungry and are afraid that your stomach will growl, have a bite to eat before going out. A handful of nuts, a fruit or vegetable, a fish sandwich – a small snack will help to avoid rumbling.
