Drying up of Niagara Falls

Drying up of Niagara Falls, 1969.

In 1969, for several months, one of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls was almost at the level of the moat.

The American Falls can be recognized by the massive pile of rocks at its base, resulting from a series of landslides over the years.

In the late 1960s, fears grew that further rockfall could completely destroy the falls. To study its geological structure and prevent further erosion, a joint US-Canadian commission decided to drain the falls for several months.
