Why Venezuela is called “Little Venice”
When the Spanish conquistadors arrived on the territory of the northern coast of South America, they noticed Indian huts in the Maracaibo lagoon. They were built on piles and connected by bridges. A native of Italy, Amerigo Vespucci, who arrived with them, looking at the huts, immediately remembered Venice, so he called the settlement “little Venice”. In Italian, it sounded like Venezuela.
