Few. Oxygen is only a by-product of the synthesis of organic matter from carbon dioxide and water, so it is released only by a growing plant that increases its mass. The dry weight of the biomass produced by a plant over a given period of time is approximately equal to the weight of oxygen released by it into the atmosphere over the same period of time. Calculations show that even a rapidly growing small plant produces no more than 1% of the oxygen consumed by humans.
