Why do Brits talk about the weather all the time?
⠀
Some features of the British geography really influence the fact that the climate on the island corresponds to the stereotypical ideas about it: mild, changeable and too unpredictable.
⠀
This means that the people of Britain never know what to expect and therefore often bring up the topic of the weather in conversations.
⠀
However, the daily conversations of the British are usually more prosaic. Comment “It’s cold, isn’t it?” does not require a detailed answer, usually it is enough to chuckle in agreement with the interlocutor. This is a kind of code to overcome awkwardness at the beginning of a conversation. Sometimes it’s a way to start a conversation, sometimes it’s to fill an awkward pause or avoid an uncomfortable topic. And sometimes it’s just an excuse to grumble together.
